E.coli were used as analogs for the other enteric Gram-negative contaminants such as dysentery, salmonellosis, etc. As in Fig. 4, four drops of three different shampoos demonstrated their abilities to kill a "wild" strain of E. coli K1:O18ac:H7. The shampoo (red) containing cetrimide essentially sterilized water in 10 minutes (an extrapolated 30 logs), while one (blue) containing polyquaternium-10, was slower yet killing about 13 logs in that same 10 minutes. The shampoo (black) containing no "quats" killed about 3 logs in those 10 minutes. Plate counts on MacConkey agar were used.
