Other Lipids

Beyond the fats/oils (the triglycerins), there are other lipids.

1. Biological Waxes (simple esters of long-chain alcohols and fatty acids)

   

2. Phospho-Lipids (all are phosphodiester derivatives of the phosphatidyl-group)
   In the figures below the gray H's indicate where the phosphoester is made.

   Phosphatidyl group	choline	ethanolamine	serine	inositol
   Name of phospholipid →	phosphatidyl-choline lecithin ("PAM")	phosphatidyl- ethanolamine	phosphatidyl- serine	phosphatidyl- inositol

3. Sphingolipids (very important brain lipids)
   Being a riddle as to their function, discoverer Johann Thudichum named them after the Sphinx in 1874.
