PROBLEM SET #2

  1. On the reverse side of the page write three questions dealing with the physical intrinsic property called "density." Allow one of your partners to critique the quality of the questions and answer them. Try to be very tricky!

  2. Suppose that you had the following in a beaker: 1 cm diameter glass marbles, 3 mm diameter glass beads, water, silver ions, chlorophyll, hemoglobin, sodium ions and nitrate ions. What methods would you use to separate these from each other?

  3. Write the symbol for each of the following elements.

    lithium iron
    arsenic lead
    sodium copper
    potassium helium

  4. Give the formulas for each of the following ionic compounds.

    Silver perchlorate Cobalt(II) chloride
    Calcium hydrogen phosphate Barium hydroxide
    Ammonium sulfate Dinitrogen tetroxide
    Magnesium sulfide Ferric oxide

  5. Give the formula for hydrogen peroxide and its catalase reaction product(s).

  6. In lab #3, we shall be working with gases. We shall be measuring the volumes of the gases produced. Why is it not necessary to weigh the gases collected in order to determine the number of moles obtained? (Hint: search your textbook for the answer!)

  7. Given 45 grams of water.

    1. Calculate the number of moles of water in that 45 grams.

    2. Calculate the number of molecules of water in that 45 grams.

    3. Calculate the mass in grams of one molecule of water.

    4. Calculate the mass percent of hydrogen in water.

  8. A certain compound which has a molar mass of 44 g/mol is 81.81% C and 18.18 % H.

    1. Calculate the empirical formula.

    2. Find the molecular formula.

  9. (Betcha can't get this one!) What is the molar concentration of distilled water?
