More Practice Problems for the First Quiz


I hope that you would be able to recognize things when you see them.  For example, were I to place in front of you a picture of a cell, you could tell me if it was prokaryotic or eukaryotic.  Name three things a eukaryotic cell has that a prokaryotic cell does not have? 


I would hope that you could identify a G(+) Bacillus from a G(-) E.coli.


With a picture in front of you, can you tell a pilus from a flagellum?


From lab, name the two types of media we have so far used in making our petri plates.  What are their purposes?


Know your relative volumes: 1 ml, 100 µl, 10 µl.


Know the essential thing in serial dilutions: If you add 1 unit of a culture to 9 units of water, how much of a dilution of the culture is that?  One-eighth? One-ninth?  One-tenth? or what?
