Writing your "CV" or "Resumé"

Eventually, in years to come, you will have to decide between a "resumé" and a "curriculum vitae" ("CV"). 96% of high school graduates do a resumé, but that 4% who go into academic pursuits or become scientists or engineers do a CV. A resumé is mandatorily a one-pager and is generally submitted with a job application, but the CV can run on and on and on because a CV-writer is expected to include ALL one's life of publications - books, journal articles, speeches, etc.

I might suggest that you ask any one of your professors for his or her CV (and call it a "CV" - they will know what you are talking about). I would suggest that you ask a professor in a discipline into which you see yourself someday going.

A CV can be built up in a permanent, though evolving, computer file. It is a very simple matter to do a little surgery on it to get it down to one page "resumé" by merely stating that you have X number of journal articles, Y number of invited speeches, etc. Thus many future pages can be shortened to a couple of lines, if need be. SO START OUT WRITING A "CV". Fill out as much of the outline below as possible AND keep it in a "CV" file in your computer.
