Who's Mary Lou?
Somewhere in a moderately sized city, three hypothetical college students attend a laboratory class taught by a Prof. Bengston. Mary Lou is a perky sophomore, who always seems to be getting herself into trouble, but usually everything turns out just fine in the end - except that she herself usually doesn't have the foggiest notion of the importance her bumbling has revealed. Thus some of her friends call her "Miss Fortune," while those who are quite perturbed with her call her "Misfortune." The two other students in Bengston's lab are both seniors. One is Jim (aka: "Jimmy-the-Bod"), who is a handsome athlete, but otherwise with an intellect that barely outshines that of Mary Lou. The other is the beautiful and super-intelligent Cheryl.
The college's out-reach program has allowed Mary Lou's whiz-kid, high school senior brother Jason, who wishes he were at least four years older (Cheryl, remember!). Jason's raggamuffin buddy Wilbie also joins in the lab experiments from time to time. The great thing about Wilbie is that his uncle works at Syntech Corporation a few blocks from the college, and that means the class has access to the most super-hi-tech instruments available. Wilbie is thus a personification of "It's not what you know, but whom you know."
