Animole Concentrations

In our zoo we have two types of animoles - large Poodeloids and smaller Smooes - and we have cages but of only one size. To the right is a picture of a cage full of SIX Poodeloids. When we weighed the filled cage we found that we had 276 pounds of Poodeloids in the cage.*

Now just in case something has gotten past you, let's tackle a few review questions:

  1. How many Poodeloids are in the cage?
  2. How many pounds of Poodeloids are there per cage?
  3. (Here's a toughie!) How many animoles are there per cage here?

Now we turn to our Smooes, of which we have more that we have Poodeloids. We set up two cages. Into the first one we keep stuffing Smooes until that cage weighs just as much as the one with the six Poodeloids. And into the second cage we place only SIX Smooes like this:

Again, just to make sure you are keeping up, let's have a few more review questions:

  1. Which two cages have the same amount of weight of animoles?
  2. Which two cages have the same number of animoles?
  3. Assuming each animole has a mouth, which cage of animoles can take the most first bites?
  4. (Here's another toughie!) Which two cages have the same number of mouths?

It was fortunate that we had an extra cage, because a half dozen Bimoles just arrived. So we had better have a few more review questions:

  1. How many animoles are in this fourth cage?
  2. How many mouths are in this fourth cage?
  3. Which cage has the most mouths?
  4. Which cages are equi-animolar?
  5. What is the sum of the weight of all the Bimoles?
  6. (Here's the final toughie!) What are the real names of the various animoles? (Hint: you can find all of them in an auto parts store, or in Wal*Mart.)

* black = 12; red = 16; yellow = 1
