P D C C C | Microbiology Schedule of Lectures and Labs |
| Current notes and guidance June 03-04, 2008 Lecture this week will only be that you have watched the movie "Medicine Man" with Sean Connery. In what way were the movie's findings similar to your honey project results so far? NO LAB THIS WEEK. But you should be making a rough draft of a journal article of your honey project using the format shown in the Columbus webpage. Create a temporary title; gather all the coauthor's names (your group-members' names; your location; give a shot at writing the opening sentences of the introduction (this will help you focus on what your "question" is); and surely put together the opening bits of your "Materials and Methods" section. WARNING #1. Dr V usually does not take off for spelling or grammatical errors. But there are three words about which he is especially sensitive: bacterium/bacteria; inoculate, and complementary/complimentary. Those who misspell/misuse those words must suffer a steep penalty, which is bringing in a box of doughnut holes for the next lab meeting to be shared by all (to be eaten during a break outside the lab). WARNING #2. Breakage of glassware results in the same steep penalty (happily one test tube doesn't count!). We might as well have fun at the expense of klutzes! WARNING #3. Since microbiology makes use of certain aspects of chemistry, Dr V needs to know what you know about chemistry. During the breaks in lecture, you will be given a non-credit status-check quiz. You CANNOT FAIL. If you get a good score, you will be allowed to go home after 9 p.m. on certain lecture days. Otherwise you will be given quickie remedial courses in the needed small areas of chemistry. As hints: needed areas include solution making, oxidation/reduction states, and glycolysis/Krebs Cycle. I do not want to bore the many of you who know these things well. YOUR FIRST QUIZ and YOUR SECOND QUIZ A reminder, Dr V welcomes you to join him for supper between the two lab sections. The Great Wall (Chinese restaurant) is a candidate. GO SURFING!
If you don't have a computer at home, remember that you can use your PDC account number at any of the three campuses - Suffolk, Franklin or Smithfield. | |
