Microbiology Schedule of Lectures and Labs
Current notes and guidance
June 17-18, 2008

Both lecture and lab will deal with the baby bacteria.

Lecture will be abbreviated to afford us some preliminary lab time so we can see results in lab the next day. Lecture will first be concerned with a quickie on the strategies pathogens use to invade our bodies, and then a quickie on the counter-strategies our body uses for prevention and suppression of infection.

Then we will delve into the types of bacteria we are likely to find - E. coli (a mixed acid fermenter), and the dairy bacteria, (a subset of the lactic-acid bacteria). We deal with their respective identifications, and that will be a review of selected portions of metabolism. So you might want to review your glycolysis notes from previous classes.

Lab will cover two areas this week: Results of the honey experiments done so far, and doing the beginnings of the baby-bacteria project. The latter will delve more into microscopy (happily a nice supply of slides and coverslips has come in so we can now do microscopy!). Also required will be our learning about making specialized identification agars. You might want to surf for how to distinguish Streptococcus lactis from Streptococcus faecalis - the two most common streps we are likely to encounter.

Of course! - For those of you who haven't yet passed the solutions quiz, there will be another attempt.

Notes and handouts you should PRINT OUT for Week #4 are:

  • More Practice Problems for making solutions
  • General Practice Problems
  • More General Practice Problems
  • Serial Dilution Problems

  • New quizzes due this week, and Old answers
