Teacher:

  1. Purpose: to teach ELECTROPHORESIS and, using the vehicle of PATERNITY testing, to introduce the student to restriction endonucleases.
  2. Preparing the paper chromosomes for the students to use:
    1. Get two sheets of letter-sized paper in each of nine differently colors
    2. Print each of the following nine sets of "chromosomes" on their own distinctively colored paper. (Open each of the following links and print two sheets of each.)
      1. Chromosome 1
      2. Chromosome 2
      3. Chromosome 3
      4. Chromosome 4
      5. Chromosome 5
      6. Chromosome 6
      7. Chromosome 7
      8. Chromosome 8
      9. Chromosome 9
    3. Cut the ten or so strips out of each page (a paper cutter works very well for this).
    4. Sort the colors out and place in boxes or envelopes for the students to use.
  3. One scissors for each pair of students.
  4. Need 1 sheet of graph paper per group (like that on page 79 of the graph paper book*
