You will "attack" this project in several steps. Below are many of the steps that you will have to do, and the links contain some of the things you need to know. This is NOT a "see and do" list. It is only a series of hints. It is thus more of a "think, gather possible methods, and try it" experiment. Go through these links and choose parts that are applicable to or can be modified for your experiment. "Research" usually entails using other people's previous methods, adding a few of your own, and coming up with a new overall process that reaches your goals.
- Print out ALL the links below, and put them in a notebook for future reference. Don't be shy about reading them!
- You must plan your experiment. Not every detail will be given to you in this website. (Hint: learn to think for yourself!) You might want to have the webmaster of this website look over your plans and make suggestions. Do this by clicking
button, and then write in (or paste in) your plans.
- You will need to obtain the necessary supplies.
- You must learn how to do various procedures. Most of the needed procedures are found by clicking
button.
- How to sterilize things
- How to obtain harmless bacteria for your experiment
- How to make the agar to pour into petri plates. Look at both of these two ways: 1 and 2.
- How to inoculate your plates. (I.e.: how put your harmless bacteria onto some of the agar surfaces in the petri plates) (One of the above links goes into that!)
- How to place your metals onto the agar surfaces, and take them off
- How to "incubate" your plates (keep them warm to speed growth)
- How to clean-up
- Put your report together
- Present your findings. (You'll know exactly what to do if you've read the immediately previous link!)
