It is infrequent that such a simple yet perplexing project like this one comes along.

Here's all you have to do: sprinkle a few water droplets onto a new teflon cookie sheet. Turn it over. The bigger drops fall, but the smaller ones stick to the teflon! But what holds them on?

Force = mass / area of contact

  Other things to do:
  • measure the force
  • try oil, wax, instead of teflon
  • vary the liquid
  • stay in contact with this website.*

Some big words may fit into this somewhere: hydrophobic, adhesion, van der Walls forces, ionic bonds, hydrophilic, or a totally new force!
