Long before pencils and paper, people drew pictures on rock surfaces - like you might use chalk on a wall. These ancient pictures were drawn inside caves, and sometimes on flat rocks out in the open.

What you will need:
Library books about prehistoric rock art
Charcoal, chalk, red rouge
Plastic sandwich bags
Egg white, drinking straws
An imitation rock surface

Scientists are concerned that fine arts are disappearing in schools. This project mixes the arts, science and social studies.

    Here is what to do:

  1. Divide the class into two groups: one will study the people who made cave drawings, and the other will study people who drew pictures on mountainsides ("petroglyphs").

  2. Each group then draws their own rock art pictures using original methods and style. Choose everyday stuff to "paint" on your rock surfaces - boom boxes, planes, cars, golden arches, computers, roller blades, and TV so that future people finding the pictures will know something about how we lived.
