| Long before pencils and paper, people drew pictures on rock surfaces - like you might use chalk on a wall. These ancient pictures were drawn inside caves, and sometimes on flat rocks out in the open.
What you will need:
| ♦ | Library books about prehistoric rock art | | ♦ | Charcoal, chalk, red rouge | | ♦ | Plastic sandwich bags | | ♦ | Egg white, drinking straws | | ♦ | An imitation rock surface |
| Scientists are concerned that fine arts are disappearing in schools. This project mixes the arts, science and social studies. |
|
Here is what to do: - Divide the class into two groups: one will study the people who made cave drawings, and the other will study people who drew pictures on mountainsides ("petroglyphs").
- Each group then draws their own rock art pictures using original methods and style. Choose everyday stuff to "paint" on your rock surfaces - boom boxes, planes, cars, golden arches, computers, roller blades, and TV so that future people finding the pictures will know something about how we lived.
