Oncogenic Viruses

ROUS SARCOMA VIRUS
The prototype!

  1. RSV is a defective RETROVIRUS

  2. Contains "src' rather than 'onc'

  3. History

    1. 1911: Peyton Rous described the cell-free transmission of a tumor agent
    2. 1956: Manaker and Groupé showed RSV makes tumors in tissue cultures
    3. 1958: Temin and Rubin found an assay procedure.

  4. RAV = Rous Associated Virus

    1. 1967: Hanafusa and Hanafusa discovered RAV, a 'helper' virus
    2. What would happen in an inoculation of a tissue culture in which both RSV and RAV plus, post-inoculation, anti-RAV was added?
    3. RAV + RSV = 'avian leukemia complex'
